This community grew and flourished but by the 18th century, the Indian community became too strong for the Portuguese and thus their population was disbursed. Today , Embu is a tourist magnate, mostly known as a mecca for handicrafts, both Brazilian and otherwise, as well as rustic furniture and antiques.
