Day 1 - Wednesday
Tokyo |
 |
Meeting at the international airport with the Ofakim representative and transfer to the hotel.
Tokyo, capital of Japan and residence of the Emperor since 1868. Tokyo is a city of old versus new, tradition versus progress, old streets with wooden houses versus skyscrapers. It is also a city of green parks versus busy, noisy streets and thoroughfares, temples versus markets, and all this works together in perfect harmony.
Transfer to the hotel.
In the evening, we will go with our guide for a walking tour of this vibrant city. |
|
Day 2 - Thursday

In the evening, we can go out to Odaiba, one of Tokyo’s new, modern areas, built on an artificial island. |

Day 5 - Sunday
Takayama (Japanese Alps)
We will begin the day with a climb up along the beautiful paths of the Japanese Alps to one of the areas typical of rural Japan.
We will go to Shirakawa-go, a traditional village that is entirely built out of wood and straw. We will see how the Japanese farmers there still live according to ancient traditions and we will visit the open-air museum, which gives an insight into the history of their farmhouses. We will then continue to Takayama, a town that has preserved its streets and wooden houses as they were in ancient times. Twice a year, in the spring and in the autumn, a big festival where the spirits of the gods are carried across the town on beautifully decorated floats takes place. For the rest of the year, these floats are kept at the museum and in storehouses in different parts of the town. |
|
Day 6 - Monday
Takayama, Kyoto
This morning we will start out at one of Takayama’s colorful markets and go to the Festival Floats (Yatai) Exhibition Hall where we will see how the wood is transformed into the wonderful floats that are displayed during the festival.
We will take our leave of the Japanese Alps and make our way towards Kyoto.
On the way, we will (conditional on permission from the factory) stop at the Toyota car plant, the name synonymous with superior Japanese technology.
After our visit, we will continue on to Kyoto, Japan’s most important culture, art and philosophy center for a thousand years, from the 9th to the 19th century. The Imperial Palace and the Shogun’s castle remain as they were in the 9th century. Transfer to the hotel. |
|

We will also go to the Golden Pavilion Temple, entirely covered in gold and very prominent in its surroundings, that sits in the middle of a lake.
We will see the famous rock garden at the Ryoanji Zen Temple and also the Kiyomizudera Temple that overlooks the city from the hills above Kyoto. In the evening, we will walk along the narrow alleys of the old city and past the beautiful shops in Gion, Kyoto’s traditional entertainment center where we have a good chance of coming across a Geisha or two on their way to their hostess club. |
