Yehiam Yehiam Fortress is located in Kibbutz Yehiam, in the western part of the Galilee. When the kibbutz was settled in 1946, its original residents lived in the fortress ruins. The massive walls protected them when they were under siege during the 1948 War of Independence. Beit Shearim Beit Shearim is an ancient Jewish city that flourished during Roman times. It became an important spiritual center when Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi ("Rabbi"), the spiritual authority of the time, made his home there. When he died in the year 220 CE, Rabbi was buried in one of the caves. This precedent made Beit Shearim an important burial place for Jews of Israel and the Diaspora. Its ruins, located near Haifa on the northern coast of Israel, are spectacular, including a necropolis that archeologists are still excavating. |
