Day 1

Budapest

Arrive in Budapest; transfer to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure to enjoy all of the delights of this city's beautiful boulevards, castles and museums. Considered the most sophisticated of Eastern European capitals, this lively and charming city divided by the Danube has retained its special Hungarian flavor over the years.

Day 2

Budapest

Morning panoramic tour with your local guide and driver features the impressive House of Parliament, the medieval Castle District, Fishermen's Bastion, Matthias Church, Heroes' Square and Gellert Hill with its magnificent panoramic views of the city. Afternoon at leisure. (B)

Day 3

Budapest

Drive to Szentendre, the charming artists' colony in the Danube Bend. Walk through the quaint, winding streets lined with shops; visit the lovely Margit Kovacs Ceramic Museum. After a stop for coffee at a local cafe, return to Budapest. Afternoon at leisure. (B)

Day 4

Budapest/Vienna

Depart Budapest by car to Vienna; check into your hotel. Remainder of the day is at leisure to enjoy one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and capture the spirit of "the waltz." (B)

Day 5

Vienna

This sparkling city on the Danube has captivated travelers for years, with its elegant shops, world-class museums, beautiful parks and gardens and magnificent historic sites on the Ringstrasse, Vienna's famous boulevard. Your morning sightseeing tour by private car includes the Parliament building, City Hall, the prestigious State Opera House and the majestic Hofburg. Then, visit the imperial Schoenbrunn Palace, known as the "Versailles of Austria," with its opulent and impressive interior. Afternoon at leisure. (B)

     

 

Day 6

Vienna

Today, drive past the Roman spa resort of Baden to the romantic Helenental. Continue to the former hunting lodge at Mayerling, where Crown Prince Rudolf is said to have committed suicide. After a visit to the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz, enjoy a relaxing boat ride on Europe's largest subterranean lake. Return to Vienna for an afternoon at leisure. (B)

Day 7

Vienna/Prague

Depart by car or minibus to Prague, capital of the Czech Republic. Drive through the lush, picturesque landscape of Southern Bohemia; stop at the magical medieval town of Cesky Krumlov. After lunch, continue to the Bohemian metropolis of Ceske Budejovice, home of Budweiser Beer, with its medieval homes and unique historical square. Continue on to the Gothic castle of Hluboka (closed Nov-Mar), built in the 13th century, with its rare collection of furniture, Flemish tapestries, china and fine art. Arrive Prague in the evening; check in to your hotel. (B,L)

Day 8

Prague

Morning tour of historical Prague includes Hradcany Castle, seat of Bohemian kings and Roman emperors, with its St. Vitus Cathedral and vaulted halls of the Royal Palace. Then, on to quaint and picturesque Golden Lane with Franz Kafka's house. You'll pass the enchanting Charles Bridge before returning to your hotel. Afternoon walking tour to the old Jewish Quarter includes the Jewish State Museum, a vast network of buildings and synagogues. Continue along the winding cobblestone lanes to the Gothic Town Hall and the incredible Astronomical Clock, built in 1490. (B)

Day 9

Budapest

Morning drive to the Renaissance Chateau of Konopiste, formerly owned by the Archduke Franz Ferdinand d'Este, whose assassination in 1914 led to the start of World War I. View extraordinary hunting collections, paintings, china and other treasures from the Hapsburg Empire. The Chateau is set amidst a large well-kept park with a beautiful Rose Garden. Return to Prague; afternoon at leisure. (B)

Prague

Day at leisure in this beautiful "golden city" of glistening domes and spires. Time to wander on your own in the Old Town to see lovely handicrafts and stop for coffee at a sidewalk cafe. (B)
