Exploring Modern Jerusalem

Exploring Modern Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is much more than an ancient city filled with religious sites and historic attractions. Jerusalem is also a modern travel destination with an international flair, boasting world-class museums and unique sporting events as well as art, design and culture festivals.

For the “Foodie” (like me) Jerusalem is the ideal travel destination offering awesome wine-bars, food tours and fine restaurants in addition to innovative culinary experiences and markets. Jerusalem’s famous and fabulous Mahane Yehuda Market offers “Shuk Bites” tours, offering travelers an insider’s view of the vibrant food stalls, produce stands and colorful vendors. One can also taste-test various items throughout the Mahane Yahuda Market (this is “Shuk”) including fresh produce, artesian cheeses, breads and organic coffees, pastries and international spices.

Active travelers wishing to explore Jerusalem on foot could join in the annual Jerusalem International Marathon. This past March’s Race celebrating Israel’s 65th anniversary year saw a unique course for 26-mile, 13-mile, and 6.2-mile running routes combining historic sites, beautiful landscapes and modern attractions, including the Old City of Jerusalem, Mount Scopus and Hebrew University, Sultan’s Pool and much, much more.

Famous for its vast collection of local and international art works and innovative exhibitions, as well as being home to the Dead Sea Scrolls, The Israel Museum hosts a number of special concerts, art showcases and endless first of its kind exhibits.

The Jerusalem Biblical Zoo offers a wide range of family-friendly tours and attractions through its grounds and gardens housing a wide variety of animals, including sand kittens, white rhinos and black footed penguins. More and more attractions are currently under consideration or under way.

For the fashion minded, Jerusalem is home to a medley of shopping areas including the picturesque Altrov Mamilla Mall, with shops which serve as a center for Israeli designers. One can shop international and home-grown designers as well as art or just relaxing in hip cafes, restaurants and galleries.

Prior to arriving in Jerusalem, travelers can get a glimpse of the action throughout the city via computer with Google Street View and keep track of their personal itinerary. For personalized service planning your own special visit to Jerusalem call the experts at Gil Travel.
