Main › Jewish Heritage Tours › Croatia › 9 Days in Dubrovnik, Zagreb, Ljubljana - Following Jewish Heritage
Suitable for Family, Group, Senior
OVERVIEW
In nine unforgettable days, you will journey through the hidden gems of the Balkans, following a trail of Jewish heritage that stretches from the medieval streets of Zagreb to the walled splendor of Dubrovnik. This definitive odyssey is meticulously crafted for those who want to move beyond the surface, offering a profound exploration of Croatia’s Adriatic wonders, Slovenia’s alpine beauty, and the “secret” history of the Ragusa Jews.
Gil Travel’s 9-day Balkan program is a comprehensive heritage experience, allowing for a pace that fosters true connection to the local communities of Zagreb, Split, and Dubrovnik. You will explore centuries of history, from the ancient menorahs carved into Diocletian’s Palace to the resilient spirit of today’s Adriatic Jewish centers. Every logistical detail is managed by our expert team, drawing on over five decades of specialized experience to ensure your journey through this stunning Mediterranean crossroads is seamless and transformative.
The Balkans are a living landscape where Jewish history isn’t just studied—it is felt. Over nine days, you will experience the full arc of the Balkan Jewish story: the scholarly traditions in the libraries of Zagreb, the ancient Roman sanctuary in Split, and the survival of one of the world’s oldest Sephardic synagogues in Dubrovnik. This is more than a vacation; it is identity travel.
By spending nine days in these lands, you move past the “highlights” to discover the heartbeat of a region that once served as a bridge between empires. You will meet local community members, taste the diverse flavors of Croatian wine and Mediterranean cuisine, and witness firsthand the stunning “Pearl of the Adriatic.” For families, it is a chance to forge lasting bonds; for seniors (+61), it is an opportunity to witness the miracle of Jewish continuity in modern comfort.
We believe that everyone should be able to touch the stones of our history, regardless of age or mobility:
Gil Travel has guided Jewish families and seniors (+61) to the corners of the diaspora for over five decades. We maintain deep relationships with local communities in Croatia and Slovenia, ensuring you aren’t just a tourist, but a guest of the community. We don’t just sell tours; we craft homecomings. When you travel with Gil Travel, you’re supported by specialists who understand that this journey is about identity, continuity, and memory.
Is 9 days enough to see Croatia and Slovenia? Yes. This itinerary is expertly designed to cover the core Jewish and cultural hubs—Zagreb, Ljubljana, Split, and Dubrovnik—without feeling rushed. It allows for full immersion in the history of each city.
Is this tour suitable for seniors (+61) or travelers with limited mobility? Yes, though travelers should be aware that ancient cities like Dubrovnik and Split have cobblestones and hills. We use private transfers and funiculars wherever possible to minimize strain, and our guides adapt the walking pace for comfort.
How is kosher food handled in the Balkans? Since there are few certified kosher restaurants in the region, we work closely with local Jewish communities to coordinate Shabbat meals and suggest the best available options for our travelers.
What is the best time of year for this tour? Late spring (May-June) and early fall (September-October) are ideal. The weather is perfect for exploring national parks and enjoying the Adriatic coast without the peak summer crowds.
Is it safe for Jewish travelers? Safety is our priority. Croatia and Slovenia are welcoming and safe destinations. You will be accompanied by expert local guides who are deeply familiar with the region and its community protocols.
What age is appropriate for children? Children ages 8 and up tend to love the “adventure” aspects of this trip, including the caves in Slovenia, boat rides to Hvar, and the “Game of Thrones” sites in Dubrovnik.
Does Gil Travel handle all the flights and insurance? Yes. We are a full-service, one-stop shop. We can coordinate your international flights, internal transfers, and comprehensive travel insurance to ensure your focus remains on the journey.
How much walking is involved? Walking is moderate. While sites like Plitvice Lakes involve walking on boardwalks, we also include boat and train rides within the park to provide a balanced experience.
How is Shabbat observed? Shabbat is a highlight in Dubrovnik. We facilitate Kotel-style spiritual connection at the local synagogue and arrange for community meals to ensure the Sabbath is a meaningful part of your trip.
Can this tour be customized? Absolutely. We can add a day trip to Montenegro, include specific family history research, or adjust the duration to fit your travel goals.
