Upon arrival at Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO), you’ll be transferred to your hotel. The afternoon begins with an introductory meeting with representatives of the Quito Jewish community, providing an overview of their history, current activities, and the week’s planned interactions. The evening culminates in a welcoming dinner with community members, fostering informal conversation and building initial connections.
The day starts with a guided tour of Quito’s historic Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, including visits to iconic churches, plazas, and historical landmarks. The tour emphasizes the city’s historical context and its impact on the Jewish community. In the afternoon, you’ll visit the synagogue and community center, learning about its architecture, history, and current role. The evening is free for personal exploration or an optional informal gathering with community members.
A day trip into the surrounding Andean highlands provides breathtaking views and opportunities to experience the region’s natural beauty. Visits to local markets offer insights into traditional crafts and indigenous culture. The afternoon includes a visit to a local artisan workshop or indigenous community, focusing on traditional crafts and their cultural significance. Return to Quito in the late afternoon.
The morning is dedicated to further engagement with the Quito Jewish community. This may include a session with community elders or historians discussing the history of Jewish migration to Ecuador. In the afternoon, participate in a cultural workshop focusing on Ecuadorian crafts, cuisine, or music. The evening offers potential Shabbat preparation or participation in a community event, if applicable.
A day trip to a nearby area of cultural or historical significance, such as a scenic viewpoint or a local village, provides further insight into the region. Upon returning to Quito, time is allocated for personal reflection and journaling. A late afternoon session is dedicated to a Q&A with community members, addressing specific questions about their experiences and perspectives.
The morning is free for last-minute souvenir shopping or exploration. After lunch, transfer to Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) for your departure.
