Our itinerary focuses on Jewish community of Sofia, visiting the majestic Sofia Synagogue—the largest in the Balkans—and exploring the unique history of how the Bulgarian people, the Orthodox Church, and political leaders successfully saved all their Jewish citizens from deportation during World War II. We will also travel to Plovdiv, one of Europe’s most ancient cities, to visit the restored Plovdiv Sephardic Synagogue and trace the community’s millennia-old roots.
Beyond the historical monuments, the trip is centered on meaningful community engagement. You’ll connect with the contemporary Jewish population at the Beit Shalom Cultural Center, meeting local leaders and young adults to hear firsthand about the renaissance of Jewish life, modern challenges, and enduring traditions. We will visit monuments honoring those who contributed to the rescue and reflect on the legacy of resilience. Your journey begins with your arrival at Sofia Airport (SOF) and a transfer to your hotel. After checking in and settling down, the evening concludes with a Welcome Dinner featuring traditional Bulgarian-Jewish (Sephardic) cuisine, setting the stage for the history and culture you are about to explore. You’ll stay overnight in Sofia.
Day two is dedicated to Sofia’s core heritage. You will visit the majestic Sofia Synagogue, the largest Sephardic synagogue in the Balkans and a masterpiece of architecture. A historical walk will take you through the “Square of Religious Tolerance.” The afternoon will focus on the unique and powerful Holocaust Rescue Story, visiting key locations that recount how the Bulgarian nation successfully saved all its Jewish citizens from deportation during World War II. The day ends with dinner on your own and reflection on this profound history.
Today, you’ll take a scenic transfer to Plovdiv (approx. 2 hours), one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. After lunch in the historic Old Town, you will visit the beautifully restored Sephardic Synagogue of Plovdiv (Zion Hall), learning about its ancient roots. The late afternoon allows for a stroll through the charming Old Town, blending Roman ruins with traditional Bulgarian revival architecture, before returning to Sofia for the night.
The focus shifts today to the contemporary community. You will visit the central Beit Shalom Cultural Center, the heart of modern Jewish life. Here, you will have a crucial opportunity to meet with local Jewish leaders or young members of the community to discuss the challenges and successes of maintaining Jewish identity today. Lunch will be at a Kosher or Kosher-style restaurant associated with the center. The afternoon includes a visit to the Jewish Museum and Archives, followed by a Farewell Dinner with the group, celebrating the connections made during the trip. You will stay overnight in Sofia.
Enjoy a final breakfast and any last-minute souvenir shopping.
Departure: Transfer to Sofia Airport (SOF) for your flight home, bringing this memorable heritage program to a close.
