10 Day Tracing the Ancient Jewish Heritage of the Caucasus in Azerbaijan

Suitable for Family, Group, Senior

OVERVIEW

Embark on an extraordinary 10-day Jewish heritage tour to Azerbaijan, a land where Jewish communities have maintained a distinct and peaceful presence for over 2,500 years, flourishing at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. This comprehensive mission offers an immersive look at the Jewish history of Azerbaijan and its three major sub-groups—Mountain, Ashkenazi, and Georgian—tracing their history from ancient times through the Soviet era to their modern revival. Your journey begins in the vibrant capital, Baku, often referred to as the “Paris of the Caucasus,” where you will immediately connect with the largest contemporary community. Visits will include the functioning Ashkenazi Synagogue, the magnificent Mountain Jewish Synagogue, and the Jewish Heritage Museum, providing essential context on Baku’s Jewish heritage and the community’s unique cultural traditions.

The extended itinerary allows for deep exploration into the cultural heartland of the Azerbaijan Jewish community, venturing north to Quba (Guba). Here, you will visit the legendary “Red Village” (Qırmızı Qəsəbə), considered the last entirely Jewish town outside of Israel, and a unique global treasure of Mountain Jewish heritage. You will have ample time for profound community encounters in both Baku and Quba, meeting with local leaders and residents to hear firsthand accounts of their enduring traditions, the challenges faced under Soviet rule, and the inspiring story of their continuity. Interspersed with these vital heritage sites, you will experience Azerbaijan’s broader cultural wealth, including Baku’s UNESCO-listed Old City (Icherisheher), the ancient Zoroastrian Fire Temple, and the natural wonder of the mud volcanoes, ensuring a rich understanding of the country that has served as a safe haven for the Jewish people for millennia.
