Main › Jewish Heritage Tours › A 5-Day Jewish Heritage & Rainforest Adventure in Panama
Suitable for Family, Group, Senior
OVERVIEW
In five unforgettable days, you will discover a hidden jewel of the Jewish Diaspora nestled between two oceans. Panama is home to one of the most vibrant and historically significant Jewish communities in Latin America, boasting a legacy that stretches from the early Sephardic pioneers to a modern-day thriving hub of Jewish life. This curated journey offers a profound exploration of the Panama Canal’s engineering marvels, the colonial charm of Casco Viejo, and the spiritual warmth of Panama City’s synagogues.
Gil Travel’s 5-day Panama program is a focused heritage experience designed to bridge the gap between ancient history and modern Jewish vitality. You will explore the “Path between the Seas,” enjoy a restorative Shabbat in a community known for its legendary hospitality, and engage with a culture where Jewish tradition is woven into the very fabric of the nation. Every logistical detail is managed by our expert team, drawing on over five decades of specialized experience to ensure your journey is seamless and transformative.
Panama is a landscape where two worlds meet, and the Jewish story is central to that connection. Over five days, you will experience the unique arc of Panamanian Jewry: from the historic streets of the Old Quarter to the bustling modern synagogues of today. This is more than a tropical vacation; it is a discovery of Jewish resilience and success in a land of miracles.
By spending five days in this vibrant nation, you move past the typical transit stop to discover the heartbeat of a community. You will walk through the historic Miraflores Locks, explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Casco Antiguo, and see how a small community has built a world-class infrastructure of schools and synagogues. For families, it is a chance to bond in a unique setting; for seniors (+61), it is an opportunity to witness the miracle of Jewish continuity in modern, tropical comfort.
We believe that the wonders of Panama should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age or mobility:
Gil Travel has guided Jewish families, seniors (+61), and heritage travelers across the globe for over five decades. We don’t just sell tours; we craft homecomings. Our team personally manages the relationship with local Panamanian partners to ensure that your journey is not just a visit, but an immersion into a community that celebrates identity, continuity, and memory.
Is 5 days enough to see Panama? Yes. Because Panama City is the hub for both the Canal and the Jewish community, a 5-day trip allows you to see the most significant landmarks—the Canal, the Old City, and the Jewish Quarter—without feeling rushed. It is the perfect duration for a meaningful “Heritage Highlight” tour.
Is this tour suitable for seniors (+61) or travelers with limited mobility? Absolutely. Panama City is a modern metropolis with excellent infrastructure. We select hotels and transportation that prioritize comfort, and our guides are skilled at adapting the pace for those who prefer to limit walking.
How is kosher food handled in Panama? Panama City is one of the easiest places in the world to keep kosher. You will have access to high-quality kosher catering and restaurants. All included group meals are strictly kosher-certified.
Is Panama safe for Jewish travelers? Yes. Panama is known for its stability and its remarkably welcoming attitude toward the Jewish community. Jews have held high-ranking positions in the government, and Jewish life is celebrated openly and safely.
What is the best time of year to visit? The dry season (December to April) is the most popular time to visit, offering clear skies for Canal viewing. However, Panama is a year-round destination, and traveling during the “green season” offers lush landscapes and smaller crowds.
What age is appropriate for children? Children of all ages enjoy Panama. The interactive exhibits at the Canal and the wildlife—monkeys and sloths—on the Gatun Lake boat tour are perennial favorites for younger travelers.
How much walking is involved? Walking is moderate. The historic district of Casco Viejo involves walking on paved and cobblestone streets, but we always provide options for shorter routes or vehicle support for those who need it.
Does Gil Travel handle all the flights and insurance? Yes. We are a full-service agency. We can coordinate your international flights from any major hub and provide comprehensive travel insurance for peace of mind.
How is Shabbat observed? Shabbat is spent in Panama City, where the density of the Jewish community makes for a beautiful experience. We coordinate synagogue visits and meals, ensuring the Sabbath is a spiritual highlight of your trip.
Can this tour be customized? Absolutely. We can add days for eco-adventures in the rainforest, extend your stay for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration, or adjust the itinerary to focus more on specific areas of interest.

Your journey begins with a private transfer from Tocumen International Airport to the upscale neighborhood of Punta Paitilla, the center of modern Jewish life in Panama. After checking in, you will take a scenic walk through the nearby streets to orient yourself with the high concentration of kosher establishments, followed by a welcome dinner at one of the city’s premier kosher steakhouses to experience the local flavors.
You will spend the day exploring the cobblestone streets of Casco Viejo, the historic district where early Jewish settlers first established their roots. After a visit to the Panama Canal Museum to understand the Jewish influence on the country’s development, you will head to the magnificent Shevet Ahim Synagogue, an architectural masterpiece of the Sephardic community, and conclude the day with a visit to a local kosher bakery for traditional snacks.
The day is dedicated to the world-famous Panama Canal, starting with the Miraflores Locks where you will witness massive ships transiting the waterway. You will then visit the Beth El Synagogue to learn about the Ashkenazi community’s history in Panama before driving along the Amador Causeway, enjoying panoramic views of the Pacific entrance to the Canal and the city skyline, ending with a relaxing evening by the water.
Today you leave the city for the lush Gamboa Rainforest, where a private boat will take you across Gatun Lake to the famous Monkey Island. After this wildlife encounter, you will return to the city to visit “Super Kosher,” one of the largest kosher supermarkets in the world, to see the incredible infrastructure that supports this thriving community.
Your final day focuses on the modern pulse of the community with a visit to the Jewish Community Center (CDI), a massive hub for social and athletic life. You will have time for a final meeting with local community members to discuss the future of Panama’s Jewish diaspora before a last-minute stop for world-class Panamanian coffee.
