Where is it Safe for Jewish Families to Travel in 2026?

Safe Jewish Heritage Tours for Families

Although anti-Semitism is on the rise, exciting destinations like Japan, the Baltic States, Colombia, Argentina and Portugal are still safe and welcoming places for Jewish families. These countries are not just interesting and unusual places to take a vacation; they also have a surprising Jewish heritage that is worth exploring.

Gil Travel specializes in creating enjoyable Jewish heritage tours in countries that welcome American Jews. When you take your family to a foreign country you need to be able to relax and focus on having a good time. The Gil Travel team visits each destination to check out local conditions and to ensure that they offer a genuinely family-friendly travel experience and a range of fun activities for younger children and teens.

Defining Jewish-Friendly Travel Destinations in 2026

Gil Travel uses a variety of criteria and tools to identify the best countries for Jewish families to travel to. These include resources like the ADL Global 100 Index of anti-Semitism and the JPPI Three-Dimensional Index. Local knowledge is equally important, and Gil Travel utilizes its connections with Jewish communities across the world to keep a finger on the pulse. Countries like Argentina that have strong and self-confident Jewish communities, or Mexico that has a Jewish president are usually free of significant anti-Semitism. Gil Travel also looks carefully at the availability of kosher-friendly hotels and kosher dining. Ultimately it’s the direct experience of a country that determines whether Gil Travel invests in establishing Jewish heritage tours and offering them to American families and groups.

Recommended Kosher Family Travel Destinations in 2026

There are still plenty of countries around the world where American Jews can relax and enjoy themselves without worrying about encountering hostility or prejudice. What Gil Travel has noticed over the years is that many families want a vacation that also exposes their kids to new aspects of Jewish culture, or to explore actual family heritage by visiting the countries that their ancestors once lived in.

The following are some of the safest countries to visit as a Jewish family in 2026, but they all have a deeper – and often poignant – Jewish connection and a wealth of historical and cultural treasures.

  •     Portugal: Prior to the Edict of Expulsion, forced conversions and the savagery of the Inquisition, Portugal was home to a large and thriving medieval Jewish community. Guided walking tours of Lisbon and Porto can bring the old Jewish quarters to life, while an excursion to the village of Belmonte tells the story of Portugal’s Crypto-Jews who secretly defied the Inquisition to maintain their culture and traditions. Gil Travel can also arrange meetings with the small but welcoming Jewish community and a full kosher itinerary.
  •   Baltic States: Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia once had important Jewish communities. Lithuania was home to the Vilna Gaon and was one of the great spiritual and cultural centers of European Jewry. Many US Jews can trace at least part of their family lineage back to Lithuania and the surrounding countries. Latvia represented one of the pinnacles of modern Jewish culture during the inter-war period, while Estonian Jews built a similarly enlightened community in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Holocaust almost destroyed Baltic Jewry, but the Baltic States are now a safe and popular destination for Jewish heritage travel.
  •     Colombia: The Latin American country of Colombia has made great strides towards overcoming its difficult past and is now an emerging recognized travel destination. There have been Jews in Colombia since perhaps the 1500s, when Sephardic Jews crossed the Atlantic with the Conquistadors. The cities of Bogotá and Medellín are home to Jewish communities (a mixture of Ashkenazi and Sephardi immigrants) and tourists can visit Colombian synagogues and meet the locals. There are also some world class museums and nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Colombia, with plenty of adventurous activities for kids.
  •     Argentina: Buenos Aires (Argentina’s capital) is home to one of the largest Jewish communities in Latin America. There have been Jews in Argentina since the earliest explorers crossed the Atlantic and the old Jewish quarters of Once and Villa Crespo are excellent places for a private walking tour. Buenos Aires has a superb kosher food scene with restaurants, delis and street food – there is even a kosher MacDonald’s. Gil Travel can arrange tours during Passover with excursions to the Pampas where the Jewish Cowboys once built agricultural settlements.
  •     Japan: Most Americans don’t realize that Japan has a Jewish connection that may go back to the 1500s when the first European traders and explorers arrived. Small Jewish merchant communities were established in Kobe and Yokohama in the 19th century and Japan later received Jewish refugees from Europe. The refugees were treated kindly and survived the war. Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara was recognized as Righteous Among the Nations for saving thousands of European Jews. Tourists can visit the Chiune Sugihara Memorial Hall in Yaotsu. Japan is a welcoming country where anti-semitc incidents are largely unknown.

Where is it safe to travel as a Jewish family in 2026?

Japan, Portugal, Argentina and the Baltic States are just some of the countries that are generally safe destinations for Jewish families in 2026. The Gil Travel team visits each country annually and monitors attitudes and behavior towards Jews. They also check out the kosher infrastructure – hotels, dining and opportunities for Shabbat observance etc.

Which countries have the lowest antisemitism for Jewish tourists?

The major country with the lowest incidence of antisemitism towards Jewish tourists is arguably Japan. Professionally compiled indices like the the ADL Global 100 Index of anti-Semitism and the JPPI Three-Dimensional Index rate Japan highly and its backed up by Gil Travel’s own experience. Most Japanese simply view Jews as other Westerners and tourists are welcome.

Is Portugal a good destination for Jewish families?

Jewish families usually find Portugal to be a friendly and welcoming destination. There is a strong Sephardic heritage and as many as 20% of Portuguese may be descended from Jewish conversos. The Portuguese are generally tolerant and there are good kosher options and plenty of historical and cultural sites to explore. If you visit in the spring or fall the weather is excellent.

Does Gil Travel vet safety conditions before running tours?

Gil Travel invests considerably in its organized tours and always carefully vets every destination. The checking includes annual personal visits and nurturing strong connections with local Jewish communities and tourist industry professionals. Ultimately, local knowledge is invaluable, both for ensuing safety, and for building a top quality travel itinerary.

Can we get kosher food in non-Israel destinations on a Gil Travel tour?

Gil Travel is expert at arranging appetizing kosher food in non-Israeli destinations. In countries like Argentina with large Jewish communities this is entirely straightforward. In places like Japan, it takes a little more ingenuity. This can involve liaising with the local Chabad or even hiring kosher-trained professional chefs to prepare kosher meals under the supervision of a local mashgiach. One of the joys of Gil Travel tours is the chance to sample kosher versions of local delicacies.

What is the best Jewish heritage trip for families with young children?

Portugal has a long Atlantic coastline with some amazing beaches, watersports and sea fishing. There are plenty of opportunities for energetic kids to let off some steam and have adventures. Lisbon and Porto also have plenty of family-friendly activities and sites. Another great country for families with young children is Argentina. The local culture is generally warm and indulgent towards kids and there’s plenty going on. Gil Travel can arrange introductions to the Jewish community and the chance to attend sporting and cultural activities.

Is it safe for Jewish families to travel in Europe in 2026?

Europe is safe to the extent that there is certainly no official or government sanctioned hostility towards Jews. Some big cities with large immigrant communities like London, Paris and Brussels may be less comfortable for Jewish tourists. Local synagogues and Jewish schools currently require protection. The Baltic States, Czech Republic, Hungary and Portugal are all safe and welcoming. Gil Travel offers Jewish heritage tours across Europe and will advise you about the security situation in each destination.

How can Jewish Families Stay Safe while Traveling Internationally?

The simplest way for Jewish families to stay safe is to travel internationally with an experienced Jewish travel company. Gil Travel thoroughly vets each destination on an ongoing basis and liaises with local authorities and Jewish organizations to keep travelers safe. It’s impossible to completely eliminate all risks, but if you take professional advice you can travel with a reasonable expectation of safety. Local Jewish guides and tour logistics staff will use local knowledge to create a travel experience that is memorable for all the right reasons.
