Israel’s incredible Marathon Season is Off and Running!

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! The marathon season in Israel has already begun. Israel has a variety of exciting marathons this spring and summer; if your travel plans include watching, or even participating in a marathon in Israel, there are plenty of incredible activities on the horizon. Many of these are annual events so if you are interested in one that has already passed, chances are, registration is already open for next year.

There are many running events in Israel, we hope these highlights help you with planning your visit or training schedule. The racing has just begun!

International Tiberias Marathon

The International Tiberias Marathon began in 1977 and was Israel’s first international marathon. Held in early January, the course took runners around the Sea of Galilee. Considered the “lowest” full marathon, runners go through the Jordan Valley, approximately 200 meters below sea level. This international event accommodates approximately 1,000 runners each year. In addition to a certificate, every runner who crosses the finish line will receive a medal as well. The first three runners in each age group will also receive trophies.

Israman Ironman Eilat Marathon

Held in Eilat, Israel in mid-January, the Israman Ironman Eilat Marathon is one of the most grueling triathlon races in the world. There are two course lengths. The full Israman totals 226 km which includes a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km bike ride and a 42.2 km run. The half Israman 113 includes a 1.9 km swim, a 91 km bike ride and a 21 km run. This event requires adequate training and preparation. Registration for next year is already open and will take place at the end of January.

Tel Aviv Samsung Marathon1

At the end of February, thousands of runners took off on a course that highlights Tel Aviv’s culture and beauty, which passes through many note-worthy sites and all the central streets of the city, such as Rothschild Avenue, the Azrieli Towers, and Rabin Square. There are multiple courses, for participants of all ages. These courses include a full marathon, a half marathon, a 10K race, a 5K race, and a mini marathon for kids. There is also a 42K handcycle race for individuals with special needs. This unique course is one of the key international events in Tel Aviv and registration for next year is already open. Organizers expect 40,000 runners to participate in the next marathon, making it the most popular running event in Israel.

International Jerusalem Winner Marathon

Set for March 21, the International Jerusalem Winner Marathon will highlight the city’s 3000 year history. There are five courses for runners of all levels, which include: a 42 km marathon, a 21 km half marathon, a 10 km race, a 5 km race, and an 800 m Racing for a Cause event. Participants in the half and full marathons are invited to a traditional pasta dinner the night before the race.

All of the courses would take runners through Jerusalem’s unique landscape and past many historical and cultural sites which includes the Old City, Sultan’s Pool, Mount Zion, and the Mount of Olives among many more.

There’s so much to do in Israel, whether you are a runner interested in participating in formidable but satisfying courses, or just like to watch and cheer on the participants. The marathon season in Israel may be short, but each of the races highlights the country’s beauty, history and culture.
