Unveiling Jewish Heritage in Vilnius: A Journey Through the ‘Jerusalem of the North’

The beautiful Baltic city of Vilnius (Vilna), the modern capital of Lithuania, was once a world center of Jewish scholarship and Torah study. It was home to Rabbi Eliyahu Kramer the Vilna Gaon and also thrived as a center of secular scientific study and commerce.

When Napoleon passed through Vilnius in 1812, he described it as the Jerusalem of the North.  Jewish tours of Vilnius open up a wonderful lost world of Baltic Jewry. Travelers can explore the historic Jewish quarter with professional guides and enjoy privately conducted tours of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum and other important Jewish landmarks in Lithuania.

Vilna was voted a European City of Culture and its Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city has some of Europe’s best hotels and gourmet kosher dining, offering an outstanding luxury travel experience. The Holocaust devastated Lithuanian Jewry, and the subsequent Russian occupation was a difficult and challenging time, but modern Lithuania is committed to the preservation of Jewish cultural sites and Vilnius’ Jewish heritage in particular.

Vilnius is an amazing destination for US Jews whose ancestors came from Lithuania, and for anybody who wants to learn more about the Vilna Gaon and the extraordinary Jewish community that he was part of.

The Rich Jewish History of Vilnius

The Rich Jewish History of Vilnius

The history of Vilnius can be traced back to 1323. The earliest record of a Jewish presence in Lithuania is dated to 1388 and it’s likely that adventurous Jewish merchants and traders established small Jewish communities long before that date. Jews arrived in Vilnius in the mid 1500s and the city rapidly began to emerge as a hub for Jewish intellectual and cultural life. Jewish culture found its highest expression with the Vilna Gaon.

Jewish heritage tours of Vilnius take travelers back to the 18th century – a period when there were a quarter of a million Jews in Lithuania – and explore the places where the Gaon developed the analytical “Lithuanian-style” of study and his disciple Rabbi Volozhin created the yeshiva movement. Although Vilnius was home to the Misnagdim, Lithuania also produced many prominent Hasidim. A customized tour of Jewish landmarks in Lithuania can include visits to sites with an historical Hasidic connection.

The old Jewish Quarter of Vilnius was officially established in the 1630s and local Jews built a synagogue that would eventually become the Great Vilnius synagogue. Vilnius Jews were not confined to the Jewish Quarter and generally had the freedom of the city, but many preferred the sense of security and community that they found in the Quarter.

There are three modern streets (Jewish, Glassmakers and M. Antokolskio) that give an atmospheric glimpse of how the entire old Quarter once looked.

The Quarter was the heart of Jewish life in Vilnius – and perhaps home to your own ancestors. A walking tour of the city will take you to the mausoleum of Vilna Gaon in the Jewish cemetery, and the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum, the Užupis and Taharat ha–Kodesh synagogues, and a historical Jewish printing house. The Great Synagogue of Vilna was savagely vandalized by the Nazis and then entirely demolished by the Soviet occupiers. Following Lithuanian independence, archeological excavations exposed the buried remnants of the structure, including its ornate floors and pillars.

The Holocaust was utterly devastating for Lithuanian Jewry. Up to 95% of the Jewish community were murdered by the Nazis. There is no exact figure, but the death toll is estimated at up to 195,000 people. A particularly poignant memorial park is located in the small village of Paneriai just outside Vilnius. It commemorates a forest massacre of Jews and other enemies of the Nazi state. The simple stone monuments stand among the trees and bear witness for the dead.

Jewish cultural preservation efforts are successfully protecting what remains of the Jewish character of the Quarter and over 500 years of Jewish history. The presence of American visitors helps to ensure that monuments to the Jerusalem of the North, and the Lithuanian Jews who created its extraordinary culture, continue to endure.

Plan Your Jewish Heritage Tour to Vilnius

Plan Your Jewish Heritage Tour to Vilnius

Lithuania is a small country (just a little bigger than West Virginia) and Vilnius is only an hour’s flight from Warsaw. Many American Jews like to plan a Gil Travel Jewish heritage tour that includes both Poland and Lithuania, or even Latvia and Estonia too. It’s worth bearing in mind that the Baltic region does get cold during the winter months. That’s great if you want to enjoy a snowy fairytale experience in Vilnius’ old city from the comfort of a luxury boutique hotel, but most Americans prefer to travel during the summer months. Spring and autumn can also be a good time to visit (especially if you want to dodge the main tourist season) but autumn can be a bit rainy.

It’s definitely worth doing some personal research or reading about the Vilna Gaon and the amazing culture of the Jerusalem of the North before you fly. You’ll get a lot more out of your visit if you have a basic grounding in the religious and social context of the historical period that produced the Gaon and other Jewish luminaries. The Gaon made a fundamental contribution to modern Jewish culture with his incisive and analytical approach to the Torah and Talmud, and also the Kabbalah. The Gaon also placed a high value on the sciences and other secular studies, further shaping modern Jewish outlook. Customized Jewish tours of Vilnius can really bring the past to life and it’s always worth arriving with some background knowledge.

An organized trip to the Jerusalem of the North is a memorable experience. If your ancestors came from Vilnius (or other Jewish communities in Lithuania) it can be a profoundly moving experience to retrace their steps and visit their synagogues. Your visit is also a special opportunity to support Jewish cultural preservation initiatives in Lithuania and to connect with the small Jewish community in Vilnius. Gil Travel can arrange meetings or social activities with Lithuanian Jews as well as the chance to sample amazing Lithuanian kosher food (we especially recommend the herring).

Lithuania is a modern country with a fascinating past, particularly for US Jews whose ancestors lived there.
