Main › Jewish Heritage Tours › Lithuania › Jerusalem of the North: A 5-Day Pilgrimage Through Jewish Lithuania
Suitable for Family, Group, Senior
OVERVIEW
Seniors and singles will find this accessible with confirmed kosher meals in Vilnius. Known as the “Jerusalem of the North,” it is the home of the Litvaks, supported by Gil Travel’s deep-dive genealogical resources.
This five day Jewish tour of Lithuania invites you to rediscover the “Jerusalem of the North,” a land that was once the undisputed heartbeat of European Jewish scholarship and Yiddish culture. Ideal for heritage travelers, families seeking their roots, seniors, and those celebrating a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, this trip is designed to bridge the gap between a glorious past and a resilient present. Lithuania stands as a global symbol of intellectual continuity; it is the birthplace of the Vilna Gaon’s analytical tradition and the home of the world renowned yeshiva movement. While the shadows of the 20th century are acknowledged with deep respect at sites like Paneriai and the Ninth Fort, the focus remains on the “Litvak” spirit, a legacy of rigorous thought, community, and an enduring cultural identity that continues to thrive in the modern streets of Vilnius and Kaunas.
Travelers will find a welcoming environment that respects religious needs while offering deep historical immersion. The trip centers on Vilnius, where the Jewish community remains an active and vital force. Practicality is a priority: you will experience a traditional Shabbat with the local community, joining services at the historic Choral Synagogue followed by communal meals at the Chabad Center or the Jewish Community Center. While the country does not have full scale kosher restaurants, high quality kosher catering and home style meals are integrated into the itinerary, ensuring that your physical needs are met as you nourish your connection to your heritage.
From the narrow, atmospheric alleys of the medieval Jewish Quarter to the moving monuments of the “Lost Shtetls,” every moment of this trip is a step through living history. You will walk the same paths as the great rabbis, poets, and partisans who shaped the modern Jewish world. Whether you are tracing a specific family lineage or simply honoring the collective memory of a civilization that once flourished here, this journey offers more than just sightseeing, it is an invitation to witness the quiet but powerful continuity of a people who have called this Baltic landscape home for over 700 years.
